MICCAI 2022 Daily – Wednesday
27 DAILY MICCAI Wednesday build a network. I cannot conclude this interview without mentioning that you are a top-level sportswoman and that you even have records on your curriculum. I do ultra-distance cycling. I really enjoy road biking. At some point during the last few years, I realized that I'm really good at just keeping going. Not particularly fast, but very long. There are unsupported long-distance bike races that basically have a start and a finish. You have to make up your own route. It's about route planning and dealing with maybe running out of food, and running out of water. You have to get your own supplies. You have to find your own sleeping spot. In 2019, I won the Transcontinental race, which is a 4,000-kilometer ultra-distance race across the European continent. When people think of ultra- distance, they do not imagine that it's 4,000 km. They imagine 30 miles. [ laughs ] You certainly had moments during your run where you felt like you wanted to give up. What gives you the strength to keep going? I didn't have these moments really, in which I wanted to give up. When you plan these races beforehand, you know that there will be hard moments. You're absolutely correct that I was tired. I was hungry at some point and something hurt. Of course. But you expect this, right? It's about managing your expectations in these races. What drives me is curiosity and wanting to know what is behind the next corner, how the next country looks. I had never been to Montenegro. I had never been to Serbia or Bosnia. There are new places to discover. I really like doing that by bike. My last question will be what kind of this winning attitude can you bring here to MICCAI? One thing that you need to find out is what you like to do. Then just really do that intensely, right? Then do a lot of it and get to the point of connecting with the community. Be curious. Curiosity is also what drives my research. That's one thing that you could distill it down to … really just enjoy what you do. Then it will be fun, and it will not be painful. If you don't enjoy something, then quit or look for something else that you enjoy more. If you enjoy something, then just try to find other people who also enjoy the same thing. Do it with them because collaboration is always key. More than 100 inspiring interviews with successful Women in Science! Fiona Kolbinger James Robertson
