MICCAI 2022 Daily – Wednesday
integrated during medical school, I profited a lot from that. I really like integrating medical students as well and also computer science students. For the project that I'm presenting at CLINICCAI this year, I've been working intensely with two of my medical students, Matthias Carstens and Franziska Rinner. They are also on the paper. They have been very excited about this research field as well. I really like sharing that kind of enthusiasm for research and for surgery. Both of them are planning to become surgeons as well. This is the biggest compliment. I love teaching, I love the interaction with students. Sharing knowledge is the best you can do for the future. In the next five to ten years, what would be a dream? If you achieved something special, what would it be? Clinical translation is something I'm very fascinated about. I'm talking from a clinical perspective here. I want to help patients ultimately. I think in surgical data science, which is like the big term for what I'm doing research on, there is this translational gap. We do a lot of video analysis, and we find out very exciting things, but it doesn't actually get to the patients to the extent that we would love it to. That's my big goal for next year. I'm very happy that we recently secured a grant for a first in- human trial. We will test the system that I talked about. This kind of navigation system can recognize different organs and differentiate them in a laparoscopic view. We will actually place that into the operating room in some cases. It's just very preliminary. It's a first step, but that was one step towards that goal. I'm hoping that we can work in that direction in the future and actually get there. Then the next step after that would of course be commercialization. So I really hope that companies could be interested in our workout, ultimately. What are your expectations from the MICCAI community? Inspiration and new ideas. I really like connecting with people, connecting with researchers. I already mentioned that it's all a collaborative effort in our research team. But, it's also very much needed that we collaborate internationally. We need to share data. We need data diversity. We need data from different institutions to make our networks better. We need more open source data. That's why I'm also happy that we could actually place this data set out there and give it to the public and research community, so everybody can work on that. I just hope to establish more collaboration and 26 DAILY MICCAI Wednesday Women in Science
