MICCAI 2022 Daily – Wednesday
Karim, you are leading the MICCAI 2024 Project, a pioneering project for our community. What can you tell us about it? That is right. I am General Chair with Julia Schnabel of MICCAI 2024, which will take place in Marrakesh, Morocco. It will be the first time MICCAI has been held in Africa. That is so exciting! I have heard you are working on some excellent ideas already. Indeed, we are putting together some ideas and strategies to achieve several goals specific to MICCAI 2024. Of course, we want to achieve the classical goals of MICCAI, which are to promote medical imaging research and AI across the globe, but we do not want to just go to Africa, have a conference, and come back. We want to ensure that we create critical mass and promote capacity building that will encourage new research to address healthcare and medical imaging problems specific to Africa. That is fascinating. How will you do it? The first thing we would like to do is create a community of students, researchers, and clinicians in AI for biomedical imaging in Africa. We have created a network called AFRICAI, the African Network for Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Imaging. It currently consists of almost 500 members from all over the African continent. We organize a number of activities to create critical mass and mentor students and researchers across Africa, with the ultimate goal to increase Africa ’ s participation in MICCAI 2024 in two years. We have a monthly webinar where we invite experts from all over the world to give classes and talks about specific topics related to AI in biomedical imaging.
