MICCAI 2021 Daily – Wednesday

someone who is trying to solve real- world problems? Processes are put in place, regulations are put in place, to take care of people, of end-users. We need to do a full evaluation of the negatives and positives. We need to be very cautious. I have always been like that. I need to check every possible angle. You need to understand the population that will look at your app, that will use it. It’s not frustrating. I really like processes and approvals that will ensure that you are not impacting negatively any population. You are still very young, at least from my point of view. Wait, 2021, so I’m 31. Why did you choose to live in Nairobi? I’m originally from Patagonia in Argentina where there is very cold weather, just to give you a context. It is rewarding. There is a lot of bias when we look to African capitals in general. I didn’t have any preconceptions before I moved here. I didn’t have that type of culture shock. I would say we are pretty similar between the Latin cultures and here. The culture is a good match. The city is growing so fast. Tell me one positive surprise about moving to Kenya and one thing that was challenging. Landing in the lab, seeing such a global community working on it, people across the continent here and also around the world, having that interaction is something you wouldn’t expect for such a young lab. There is such a mix of backgrounds from all over the place. That was a positive one. A negative one, I would say, is traffic. Now, with the pandemic, it’s not such a big issue, but traffic is tough. I know they are working on it. They are building highways, but initially, you could get stuck in traffic for a while. Tell us about Patagonia! What is it like to grow up there? I’m from a very small town, on the east coast of Argentina. You have whales, sea lions, penguins... In Puerto Madryn, we have a very big research facility called the Patagonia Research Center, where I worked during my PhD. It’s a very tranquil, calm, small town with easy access to other areas. 28 DAILY MICCAI Wednesday Women in Science “During my PhD, I was doing 24/7 work!”
