MICCAI 2020 Daily - Wednesday

22 Women in Science world, because Cuba is an island. At the moment, we don’t have the resources to show to the world how good Cuban education is, specifically Cuban higher education. You are doing it now! You are showing us the results of Cuban education. That’s a way! Tell me something about artificial intelligence in Cuba. That’s a very interesting question. When I started working in artificial intelligence, I graduated fromuniversity, and I realized that I really liked this topic. I went to work at a research institute in Cuba. At the moment, in Havana, it was the only one I found, where people were doing artificial intelligence. We had two departments: a pattern recognition department and data mining department. I started working in the pattern recognition department. After that, I realized that at the University of Havana, professors started to work on artificial intelligence topics too. It was not as big as in Europe, the USA, or China. It was difficult to find more people working on that. At my institute, my director created a workshop for people working in artificial intelligence in Cuba. After that, they created the Cuban Society for Artificial Intelligence. Then another technical university from Havana also started having people working on these topics. There were more people. I could see the quality of the work from my institute, from the universities and from provinces by attending to the workshops. In the case of the provinces, mostly in the universities, there are good research groups doing artificial intelligence, maybe more related to text processing, not exactly artificial intelligence. Usually, these groups specialize in one topic. Other people were working on image recognition. They needed artificial intelligence more because of the computer vision part... In my research institute, we had many topics.Wedidthings relatedtocomputer vision, to data mining, to artificial intelligence, more from a machine learning perspective. The quality of DAILY Wednesday “… accessibility in science; accessibility in artificial intelligence; transparent, fair and responsible development of artificial intelligence.”
