MICCAI 2020 Daily - Tuesday

When we look back on the last two decades, what we cherish the most from MICCAI is meeting such a wide range of folk in the community . This sense of meeting each other in person and freely brainstorming on various topics is something we all miss, but we hope our virtual platform is going some way towards replicating this for everyone. Future collaborations depend on it! In fact, a key benefit of a virtual conference is that it is far more accessible than a physical event, all without adding to the carbon footprint . It breaks down barriers, such as the cost of global travel , allowing anybody from anywhere in the world to gain access to the high-quality content and networking opportunities it provides. Getting to this point has been a three-year journey with many sleepless nights, early wake- up calls, and global Zoom meetings! Little did we know what a huge logistical operation lay ahead of us. We would like to thank all the program chairs, area chairs, reviewers and authors for their commitment and motivation this year which has ensured everything runs smoothly and that the conference is a success! The exponential growth in papers and the way the global balance of authors has shifted in recent years has been fascinating to watch. In the past, papers primarily originated from North America and Europe , but now we see the majority of papers coming out of Asia . This is a positive effect of open source machine learning technologies and open data platforms. It allows younger researchers with less access to major clinical centres or large laboratory facilities to contribute scientifically to the advancement of medical imaging . We want to recognize the outstanding group of students who are being trained as a result of this global effort and who will then go on to contribute to industry, academia, and to create the next generation of scientists and trainees. Being able to advance the technologies underlying medical imaging for patient care going forward is a huge accomplishment of the MICCAI Society .
