MICCAI 2020

DAILY Mo n d a y Clarisa Sanchez 29 for a different path. If that’s not there, we have to make it. Feeling that there is always a path, no matter where it is, even if you cannot see it now, this gives me hope to continue. I interviewed Jessica Sieren some time ago. She told me, “If you are doing a PhD, and you don’t have a major crisis, you are not doing it right!”. [ laughs ] I do agree with her. I do. Did you ever have a moment when you were really near to giving up? At the end of my thesis. Why? Because I didn't see things progressing, I didn't see that path anymore, and I was like, “What have I done in the last 4 years? What am I going to do?” . There was a moment of… Discomfort? Yeah, exactly. What did you tell yourself? Let’s say you have a little sister who is just about to do her thesis, and she says, “I am really having a hard time getting through this” , what would you tell her? I would say, based on my experience: please do not compare yourself to others. That is always bad. Your path is different from others. Make your own path. Do something that you like. Do not let others tell you your path. Did anyone ever try to guide you to a different path that was not truly yours? Yes, maybe not that way but in a way. You are in a career, and it seems that all the steps are decided how you have to reach that path. I don’t like it. I don't “Do not let others tell you your path!”
