MICCAI 2019 Tuesday

MICCAI 2019 DAILY 7 Prof. Qiyong Gong Yes, stigma. That’s the issue. But once we develop this psychoradiological system, then it doesn’t matter. They don’t have to admit anything. We should probably say to everybody: these are physical and biological conditions. Nobody should be ashamed. Exactly. I agree with you completely. It’s like somebody being ashamed that they broke their leg, or that they have a scar, or the flu. Exactly. The stigma should be erased. What can we do in order for this stigma to be erased? If we improve this subfield, psychoradiology, that will really help to release or reduce the feeling of stigma for patients. For clinicians, that’s very useful because they don’t have to make decisions based on asking questions about how people feel or their experiences. They will rely heavily on radiology. It’s like a neurologist or a neurosurgeon; they can’t do anything without imaging. They have to scan the patient to decide where the tumor is and how big it is before they can carry out any further surgical process. What are your expectations from MICCAI this year? Do you think your keynote will inspire students to start research in this direction? Yes, that’s my main objective for delivering this keynote. I think it’s a unique opportunity for me to raise awareness. We are basically a problem- solving process. As clinicians, we have identified the problem and presented the topic and research direction, and this is a tremendous opportunity for the MICCAI community. It will be a tremendous help and considerable benefit for the community to be aware of this vast area in the field of medicine and psychiatry. We need help from MICCAI! Let’s say that I am a new PhD student and I’m looking for a subject for my work. Do you have any suggestions for directions that students may not have thought of that might lead to a breakthrough and help you advance this field? Very simple. I think just diving into psychoradiology. It’s a small subspecialty at the moment, but it’s an advanced field to get into. There are manyopportunitiesand lotsof questions for them to resolve. The ultimate future goal is a translational application to resolve the clinical problem. The whole community is invited to this morning’s keynote speech by Professor Gong and to learn more about this fascinating and important new field of work. Come along to the Espana Ballroom at 8:30.
