MICCAI 2019
MICCAI 2019 DAILY 6 Welcome Yesterday evening, I had dinner with a participant who asked me: “Will people travel to Peru, and are there enough laboratories in South America to justify that?” Latin America is relatively large and although there might be fewer in numbers, it is important to give them a chance to have some exposure. It’s not just about the numbers of researchers, but also to expose the international participants to local health problems that could be of interest, and we’re planning sessions on that. It’s not just a matter of how many do you have, but also what is the impact that bringing something to a region for the first time can have, and how will that inspire different researchers. That’s the idea. What advice do you have for researchers who are coming to MICCAI for the first time? How can they take maximum advantage of the conference? I understand that for first-time attendees this can be overwhelming. The two important points are to listen to the talks and to the invited speakers as much as you can, and also to talk to people and exchange ideas. This is the main benefit of a face-to-face meeting that you don’t get in a virtual meeting. Listen to other people’s experiences and interests. People are usually very open and friendly and more than happy to discuss their research. The informal aspect of the meeting is as important as the formal one. My advice would be to enjoy yourself and talk to as many people as you can. One participant asked me: “I work for a company on medical imaging research and I am allowed to go to one conference every year. Did I choose well coming to MICCAI? ” What would you say? I would definitely say yes. There is a showcase of different research directions here. As I said, because of the size and diversity of the workshop events and sessions in the main conference, I’m sure that everyone can find something that is of interest to them. What can you tell us about the satellite events (tutorials, workshops, and challenges) this year? These are always an integral part of the conference. This is a chance for different groups to gather researchers in their specific areas of interest, and this year we have a record number of those – almost 60. They even extend into the evenings to give people maximum opportunity to take part. You can choose to follow some of them or all of them according to your interest. They are an integral and interesting part of the event.
