MICCAI 2018 Daily - Wednesday

boss. Actually, on the side, you can engage with startups. A lot of students, these days, don’t necessarily want to go to industry, but they want to do startups. Actually, this is one thing you can do nicely if you are an academic. It’s very difficult to do that if you work for Siemens or Philips. I try to convince them. If you’re not quite sure what you want to do, go for an academic career, but also consider, at least part-time, engaging with a startup. We have a number of examples like that. You have a huge number of papers in this conference which bear your name. I guess your students have done a lot of good work. [ laughs ] Oh, they have done all the work! Now that you know both sides of the coin, is it more satisfying when you have a paper of your own acknowledged at a conference or when a student of yours gets this reward? [ laughs ] My last first-author paper at MICCAI was a while ago. But you can compare the satisfaction of the two. Exactly, there are two different levels of satisfaction. One is clearly if you have done something yourself, you’re really proud of it. You know exactly what you have done. It’s a great achievement. I’m also very excited if I see my students on the stage giving, for example, a talk at MICCAI. Actually, I’m probably more nervous when the students give a talk than when I give a talk. I’m immensely proud of what they are doing. They are fantastic individuals. I feel equally proud if they give the talk. Is there anything else you would like to share with the community? Well, I think it’s very nice to see an ever-increasing community such as MICCAI coming together. I think it’s also very nice that diversity is more and more embraced at MICCAI. It’s great to see such a diverse set of people coming to MICCAI. I hope this will increase even more in the future.
