MICCAI 2018 Daily - Monday

This is your first MICCAI. Yes, my first. How did you wind up in this community? First of all, because MICCAI is a well- known conference, I knew about it from the beginning. Also, I heard about it from a lot of colleagues in the Mechanical Engineering Department. There are some colleagues who are coming more often to this conference. That was the reason. What is your connection to this? This year, I just came to attend because I am finishing my Ph.D. so I thought, maybe, it’s nice to be at this conference this month. So yeah… I don’t know what will happen. What about your work? I’m doing research because it’s going to finish at the end of September. What is going to happen at the end of September? Because I finish my thesis, I am waiting for that from my supervisor. Then I’m going to get the date for defense. In my Ph.D., I try to model the motion of guidewire in catheters during the interventional procedures. There are different kinds of guidewire in catheters. Sometimes it's challenging for doctors to choose a specific wire. In my research, I try to make a simulation model which can predict the motion of this instrument based on the mechanical properties of the wires and also the vascular system. Then they can choose the most suitable wire for each patient. It also depends on the desired location where they want to get access. That sounds difficult to me. Is it difficult for you too? [ laughs ] Yeah! In the beginning, especially the first and second year, it was very challenging and difficult, but now I’m very happy that I finished it. I’m looking forward to the next career. When did you decide to become a scientist? Hmm… That’s a good question. That’s what I’m here for. When I received my offer for my Ph.D. project, I found it very interesting.
