MICCAI 2016 Daily - Wednesday
MICCAI Daily: Firat, what is your current position? Firat Ozdemir: First, thank you for this interview. I am a PhD student in ETH Zurich in the Computer Vision Laboratory. In the computer vision lab, we actually have a medical domain where I am a part of the Computer-assisted Applications in Medicine (CAiM) group. MICCAI Daily: What does this group do? Firat: My supervisor is Professor Orcun Goksel. Mainly, the focus is to create medical assistance applications in software, such as segmentation and registration. Most papers you will find in our group will be somehow related to ultrasound. MICCAI Daily: Why did you choose ultrasound? Firat: Ultrasound has many advantages over other fields such as being very readily available in most hospitals. It’s relatively cheap. Plus it provides real time information. The patient doesn’t need to, for example, stand still in an MRI for a half an hour. Also, there is no radiation. As far as it is known, it has no bad effects on health. However, I don't want to sound as if I am looking down on either MRI or CT. I currently also work with MRI after all. MICCAI Daily: You are presenting your poster today at 10:30 (PS3-11). What is the work that you are presenting here? Firat: We are presenting a work related with finding, localizing, and segmenting bone surfaces from ultrasound images. In this particular work, we use 2d images like a single 2d image where we try to find bone surface on this image. We propose a novel graph representation of bones in US. This has many possible uses. Due to the very low signal to noise ratio in ultrasound, we cannot completely reject other imaging methods such as CT or simple X-rays for orthopedic surgeries. At least so far. However, for example, on top of standard CT, ultrasound can be used for intra-surgical assistance guidance for doctors. For example, if you had a surgery and need follow up when you break your arm; at each follow up, this way you may avoid to get X-rayed.
