MICCAI 2016 Daily - Tuesday

Also, we would like to do more as a society towards standardization. For example, if you look at the radiological community, there is a lot of work towards quantitative imaging biomarkers. These are measurements from images that you can use to see whether a disease is present or the stage of the disease. Implementing those biomarkers as part of clinical practice means that MICCAI methods are going to be used daily in the hospital. That requires some kind of standardization. At the moment, there is standardization, but the standardization is more the efforts of the radiology community and more on the image acquisition side. It’s about how to scan and with what kind of sequences. It is really important that standardizations happen also in the processing side. Ralph: What advice do you give to a young scientist who is arriving to their first MICCAI this year? Perhaps they are presenting their first poster. What would you tell them to encourage them and to go further in the career? Wiro : First, you should really enjoy, be inspired, and meet people. Some of my best friendships are from my first conferences because you meet people who are also working in the field. You are still insecure about your place in the field, but for the first time, you are presenting the work you worked so hard on in an international forum. Talk to the people. Interact. Go to other posters. Ask questions. Enjoy. It’s really a place where, on the one hand, you can learn and inspire other people, but still be inspired. I’m sure many of the young people here will make friendships that last. From friendships can sometimes come collaborations. Further, beyond this conference, I really think you have to follow your passion. I think most people that are here have a passion for research, to investigate, to understand things, and to improve things. Keep following that. It’s easier earlier in your career to do it. Later on, there may be all kinds of other reasons. I think the people that do their best work and enjoy their research life the most are the people that keep asking what is it that they like to do the most. If you do what you like the most, then most of the time you will also perform at your best and make a big impact. CVPR Daily: Thursday “ Enjoy, be inspired, and meet people.
