MICCAI 2016 Daily - Tuesday
Siemens there are increasingly more companies interested in the concept of data analysis of which imaging plays a key role in order to improve diagnosis and improve the quality of life. There are large number of companies related to the image guided computer assisted intervention fields that sent their researchers here to present. Some of the high quality science in MICCAI comes from these companies. Also, there are some people who find their jobs in industry here. While I think their relationship is very good, we could even further improve the relationship between the healthcare sector and industry. Perhaps it’s not only the MICCAI community, but in general, because it is not easy to translate technology into the market. It’s not easy to build up clinical evidence that systems actually work. Companies are sometimes struggling to get the data or to get the studies. I think increased collaboration between companies, academia, and clinical centers will more quickly develop and translate solutions from the proof of concepts, which happens at MICCAI, towards the market and implementation. I think that we can work together and build even stronger relationships. Ralph: How should that happen? Wiro: We’ll have to work in an iterative cycle. We cannot expect to build something, and it will be perfect. We need to have a prototype to develop and get feedback. I would say, the sort of an ecosystems in which you can jointly develop. There must be a place for state of the art technology and for people to bring it further. This also means clinical domain experts bringing in the proper questions, data, validation, and industry which allows for attracting the funds of eventually getting regulatory approval for these solutions. Working as a community to establish these fruitful collaborations between technology, clinicians, and industry in more places is very important and where we would like to promote ourselves as a society. We want to consolidate ties with industry and make this connection more structural. We are talking, for example, about establishing an industrial advisory board, and we hope to launch it very soon. That is the direction we are going. A Word fromWiro 15 MICCAI Daily: Tuesday
