ISBI Daily - Thursday

6 Thursday ISBI DAILY Great question. My best answer to that question pertains to the interaction between the academy and the hospital. I’ll tell you what I did last semester. I submitted a grant a year ago with the main purpose of taking me out of the university and putting me in the hospital for an entire semester. What I did is I embedded myself in the hospital and I learned their language, I learned their methods, I learned their modus operandi, and it was really fun. So, I don’t know if it works for everyone, but I think embedding is becoming the key. That can go the other way, embedding people from the medical profession in engineering or in computer science. As to the industry, at the University of Virginia where I’m at, we are providing desks and office for industry collaborators, so that they can work side by side with us and be right there at the center of the research portion of the work. I think actually being a part of one another’s world is going to be a key for the future. I think it’s pretty exciting. I think I remember Nassir Navab giving last year this advice to students: talk to doctors, in particular to surgeons. See what they need, before you start your work. Definitely. Would you agree with him about that? Scott Acton “ Talk to doctors! ”
