ICCV Daily 2021 - Wednesday
the reason I came to California. Do you see yourself continuing in this direction? Yes, currently I am a Postdoc. This year I have applied for jobs at companies. I was very interested in doing research with real applications. For research, the most important thing is your curiosity. We are curious about knowledge and developing new algorithms. It is a self-motivated process. In the long term, I will still want to do research. I feel comfortable, and I feel great doing research. You develop yourself by learning more knowledge and new algorithms. This process is fascinating. You sound very happy with your career path so far. Looking ahead, what is your dream? Actually, I’m not a person with big dreams, as compared to my supervisors. [ laughs ] Maybe you have small ones! Yes! I still hope that one day, I can see some products that actually use my algorithms. That is my small dream, that my algorithms can have real applications in real products. But there are easier ways to make products that people use. Why did you choose research? That’s a good question. After my Bachelor’s study, my GPA was quite high. I feel that learning knowledge, in itself, is quite interesting. I did not want to go find a job at the time. That’s the reason that I chose to apply for a PhD. You sound very happy that you made that choice. Yes, very happy, but there were some hard times during my research studies. It’s not always joyful. After you conquer the difficulties, you get the rewards. Do you have any advice to give to young students before their PhD? Yes, I do have advice for young students. Resources are plentiful. Young students have opportunities to know how research works by doing summer internships at companies or at professors’ labs in college. If they feel interested in research, I advise them to first try a summer internship. Also, even though sometimes the research seems difficult, I advise them to be open-minded. Talk to your friends. They will encourage you to feel better. If you could change one thing about America, what would you change? [ laughs ] I hope the visa can be an easier process! When I wanted to come to America, I applied for the G1 visa. It really takes a long time to process. I know that some students in China couldn’t continue their studies last year, so I hope that the visa process will get better. Do you have a message to share with the community? I hope the coronavirus passes soon so we can meet in person! See you next year at CVPR! 26 DAILY ICCV Wednesday Women in Computer Vision
