ICCV Daily 2021 - Thursday
8 DAILY ICCV Thursday More from Jon… About good reviews: Jon is often recognized in the community as an outstanding reviewer , so we take this opportunity to ask him if he has any advice for prospective reviewers. “ Writing a good review is challenging, ” he replies. “ The obvious advice is to read and understand the paper and give it the time it deserves. Someone worked hard on it, so they deserve a few hours of your time. Check it for correctness, all the important things. People are pretty good at that usually. ” What are people not so good at? “ I’d say being kind when they’re writing a giant pile of reviews! The computer vision community is a kind and welcoming community generally. I’m grateful to be a part of it. I know not all academic research communities are as positive and healthy as this one, so I’m always conscious of paying that forward. Once you develop a mindset of trying to be kind, you can write a review that is both critical and constructive, but also warm and encouraging. Those are the best reviews to get. You can be negative about a paper and point out its flaws, but there’s also value in being encouraging and helping the author find their way to a better paper if they’re not quite there yet. ” Jon works in the Perception team at Google Research , which is a large team of hundreds of people who are primarily focused on understanding signals of things . So, understanding pictures, sounds, videos. There is also an emphasis on synthesizing media. “ I have my own team that focuses on NeRF research and that’s basically all we do right now, ” Jon tells us. “ We’re part of a larger team focusing on creative technology in the vision, graphics, HCI, and audio space. Much of the work we’ve done has been on computational photography type applications. Things that have resulted in features in Google Pixel phones, like portrait mode or portrait lighting. I developed a lot of work for that. It’s a great organization to work for. Your readers might be pleased to hear we’re always hiring! ” About the Perception team at Google Research
