ICCV Daily 2019 - Wednesday

There was no option for you to do your PhD in Algeria? Of course, I had the opportunity, and I also had a scholarship from the government to do my PhD in Tunisia. I rejected the offer, and I decided to do a second master’s in France. Then I pursued a PhD in France. Can you tell us why? Well, my point was not to stay in Algeria or a region near Algeria. Before I had a scholarship, I had the intention to go to France and after, maybe to another country. It was not an option since the beginning. But itwas an option fromthe beginning to become a scientist. Yes, of course. When did you decide that? Since my bachelor’s, I said that I wanted to be a researcher so when I was in university. I said I would do a research project. I worked on the full detection of elderly people. In my master’s, I said that I want to continue doing the research. I did a research project about optimization. I also worked on the adaptation of the BSO meta-heuristic from discrete to continuous domains. After, when I did my master’s again in France, I said I wanted to continue in 11 Eden Belouadah DA I L Y research. I worked on evolving neural networks. It was the beginning of the idea to work with incremental learning. Incremental learning, my thesis, was the continuity of the master’s that was involved in neural networks. How did the idea of becoming a scientist begin? To be honest, since I was a teenager, I was so affected by video games and the internet. I said: “One day, I want to make video games!” Then I said: “I want to program!” Then I had this idea that I want to be a programmer, so I said computer science. I know that with these kinds of things, we need to be patient. We need to do research. We need to do lots of things. Well, now I’m not working on video games because, when I went to university, I had other ideas. I had other information, and I changed the domain. This was the beginning.
