ICCV Daily 2019 - Tuesday

That’s not to say that we didn’t have some challenging moments along the way. With such a large program, there were some complex conference calls between program chairs. I recall there was a call in July when I (Nikos) was sat on a beautiful beach in Greece. There was a heated exchange about something, and I was talking loudly and waving my hands up and down. Everybody on the beach was looking at me and laughing, including my wife! I am so proud of all the work that everybody has done. We have all worked so well together as a team and every person in the organization has had an important role to play and has succeeded in doing what they were tasked to do. Everyone is different, and we have some strong characters, but when there are so many of you working together for a common goal it’s important to strike a balance and put your differences aside. I think the fact that we have delivered everything on time and with barely any complaints is a big success story! I hope that everyone will enjoy the conference. That’s the most important thing. I wish great exposure for those of you who have papers and I wish for you to build a network . That’s what this conference is all about – it’s not only about getting the credit you deserve for your work, but meeting people because these are the people that will help you in the future, whether you want to pursue an academic career or work in industry. The last thing I wish for you: have fun in Seoul! Finally, I (Nikos) would like to congratulate you, Ralph. You are doing a great service for the community. The conferences are getting bigger and bigger and it’s almost impossible for someone to see everything. What you are doing helps people to get a global vision of these scientific advances in the field. It’s a great service for the community, so please keep it up and keep working hard on not sleeping so that the magazine is ready for the next day! I genuinely think it’s a great service for the community and we should congratulate you and have an institutional way of giving you the credit that you deserve for this effort. I (Ralph) would also like to congratulate Nikos and the whole organizing team for a fantastic program this year and the amazing work that you have done. Your description of the conference is also what our magazine is all about. We want to showcase the papers, of course, but we also want to show the human side of the work : the people that are behind a paper.
