ECCV 2020 Daily - Tuesday
2 General co-Chair 1 It kind of separated the community. As you know very well, there is overlap, but I think what is frustrating, is that there is so much unused potential in computer vision for medical applications. If you take conferences like CVPR or ICCV, something similar has happened with machine learning. There's ICML, these kinds of specialized conferences on machine learning which have some overlap with computer vision, which have some overlap with medical image, but the community has forked out. Another big thing which has happened, which is a good thing, but again, is a kind of distorting or morphing the system, in a good way, is the sudden increase in the numbers of people from the Far East which entered research and made their mark. If you think of the very steep growth of CVPR, for instance: half of the 9,000+ delegates last June in Long Beach were from Asia and mostly China. They are really getting their act together, which is a good thing f or science. Of course, you know, the organization of worldwide research must adapt. [ laughs ] This is a very special edition of ECCV, since it is online. For some of the delegates, it will be their first conference. It's a very strange conference for them to start their membership in the community. Do you have a message for them to make the most of their experience, even if they can’t meet in person? Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say these things. As you know, CVPR has been online. ICML has been online, and so on. This edition of ECCV tries to do something else, something more, for these online conferences. For instance, the portal tries to produce a sort of virtual reality feeling. You enter a room and you can fork out to different parts of the building. To make things a little DAILY T u s d a y
