ECCV 2020 Daily - Tuesday
2 General co-Chair 10 DAILY T u s d a y Emanuele Trucco is the NRP Chair of Computational Vision in Computing, School of Science and Engineering, at the University of Dundee, and co-director of VAMPIRE (Vessel Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the Retina), an international research initiative led by the Universities of Dundee and Edinburgh. Emanuele, can you tell us about your work? My main interest has been for many, many years, the analysis of images in videos, and for the last 15 to 20 years, I verged on analysis of medical images. In particular, I would say what we do at the moment in my group is the analysis of images of the eyes, predominantly, the retinas acquired with the different instruments for a double purpose. The largest one, in terms of the amount of work, is turning into a very exciting enterprise. We're trying to understand whether the eye, particularly the vasculature, the blood vessels in the retina, can provide useful biomarkers for the risk of high prevalence, high incidence diseases. We concentrate mostly on the various types of dementia, particularly vascular and cardiovascular diseases, and their complications. But there are other things that the retina seems to be able to correlate to. We've worked on the kidneys, which of course, has to do with diabetes and other things. The other thing we do is, still with images of the eyes, detection and quantification, and so, helping clinicians essentially, with eye-specific diagnosis, so things like glaucoma or risk of glaucoma, things that you can see in the eye, essentially. All this has been a super exciting adventure, because it has grown from a collaboration between me and my colleague Tom McGillivray, in Edinburgh, some fifteen years ago, to a planet-wide operation, in which the suite of software tools we have developed, which goes under the collective name of VAMPIRE, has become very well known.
