ECCV 2018 Daily - Thursday

Margret Keuper Daily Thursday 13 Women in Computer Vision 10 Margret Keuper is assistant professor at the University of Mannheim. Her research interests include computer vision and image processing, specifically looking at grouping problems such as image segmentation, motion segmentation, efficient video segmentation, semantic segmentation, and multiple object tracking. Margret, how did you come to study in your field? When I studied at Freiburg, there were several options I had after doing my diploma. I considered, for not so long, an offer from Thomas Brox’s predecessor in Freiburg. He offered me to work on biomedical image analysis. At the time, I thought, working on projects with concrete applications was useful. It’s going to serve humanity at some point. At least, you hope for it. This was a position in one of these Excellence Clusters. I liked that, but at the same time, it was also kind of frustrating because you always depend on collaboration with partners. You also don’t know whether something else would have worked better so you try several things. You don’t know whether you did everything to its best because how could you know? This is why, after finishing with my Ph.D., I wanted to completely move away from this specific application, work on tasks where you can find benchmarks, and compare your own progress with some metric. “How could you know?”
