ECCV 2016 Daily - Thursday

ECCV Daily: What is the practical application of this work? Errol: Gaze estimation has a lot of uses. Our work in particular is good for estimating gaze over different types of devices. Previous approaches maybe only work for phones or laptops. Whereas, a system like ours can potentially work over any type of device. ECCV Daily: What are the next steps? Errol: The next step is potentially moving beyond the eyes and trying to model more of the face to see if similar approaches work with that. Also, modeling things that we don’t currently handle like eyeglasses or more complicated elimination scenarios. ECCV Daily: You are focusing on human eyes, right? Errol: For now - maybe animals in the future... [laughs - I knew he would] One of the good things about using generative models is that when things go wrong, your errors are quite humorous. We got goblin-like faces or facial expressions that are totally bizarre. That’s always quite fun to experience. Presentations 9 ECCV Daily: Thursday
