Cheng: Talking definitely helps. My supervisor is a female as well. Her name is Hedvig Kjellström. The head of our lab is also a female. People have their own freedom to think what they want. It’s not general. Not everyone thinks like that, but it happens. For example, some people from certain countries where females have an even worse situation may think differently; they have different life experiences so you cannot stop it. ECCV Daily: Did you ever feel that kind of jealousy toward others? Cheng: Maybe I can feel jealous, but I think when a male is jealous of another male, they will just think that they are lucky or it was the right time for him. This can happen between people. When it is a male toward a female, the reason can be a bit nastier. I find jealousy is something that happens all of the time whether it’s milder or because it’s unfair because she is female. ECCV Daily: Do you think that people feel that way because you are female? Cheng: I think people in general have jealousy toward people who get a good position, but when it’s toward a female, the jealousy is stronger. ECCV Daily: When your teacher told you not to think about, did it help? Cheng: Yes, it helped because they all shared their experiences. They had similar experiences before as well. ECCV Daily: No one succeeded in hurting you? Cheng: Maybe for a day or two, but it went away pretty fast. It happens. It’s a bad day. It’s not a bad life. ECCV Daily: Aside from that, have you ever met any obstacles as a female? Cheng: I wouldn’t say obstacles because people in my labs like me. I don’t feel like that’s an actual obstacle. It’s more of a mental obstacle so it depends on how I deal with it. ECCV Daily: Did it prevent you from doing something or were you always able to do it your way? Cheng: I think for me I always do it my way. I also know people who really care about what other people think, and try to be more conservative in some way.
