I knew it would finish training the model before Christmas, so I was impatiently checking the logs every day because I wanted to know: Does it converge or not? Will it work? I didn’t have a lot of attempts. I ran something to test if it worked, and then I had to train the whole model, and if it failed, I wouldn’t have had a backup option, so I was like, ‘Please converge! Please converge!’” Fortunately, the wait was worth it, and the model converged, allowing Anna to move forward with her work. On that note, she is optimistic about the future of SynthBrainGrow. Drawing inspiration from other researchers and papers at MICCAI, she hopes to refine the method herself but also welcomes the possibility of others taking inspiration from her work and expanding on it. “I’m always happy if someone reaches out and says: ‘Oh, I like your work, and I want to do a spin-off of it.’ That really warms my heart,” she smiles. “One of the best parts of being a researcher is to see your work inspire something else!” In addition to presenting innovative research at this year’s conference, Anna claimed third place in the Educational Challenge at MICCAI last year, a competition focused on creating reusable educational materials for future generations. “That was actually a very fun thing,” she recalls. “I saw on LinkedIn that MICCAI had this challenge to create a database of nice, reusable materials for future generations, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s really fun! That’s like a switch from writing papers that could be something new and fresh, why not try it?’” She spent considerable time understanding the complexities of MRI imaging preprocessing, where she saw a resource gap.
