3 MONAI v0.3 39 have that impact. This close alignment of the primary goal of developers and the primary goal of open source means that these developers and these platforms are likely to be working together for a very long time. The developers also enjoyed the collaborations that came from producing open source, with those collaborations often improving their research as well as their code. Being a developer on an open source project, however, alsopresentsnumerous challenges. In particular, the ITK and MONAI developers acknowledged that it was paramount to produce code that was useful, high quality, readable, and future proof; but these goals are often confounded by these platforms being at the forefront of computational capabilities. Nevertheless, the benefits outweighed the costs, and several of the developers acknowledged that they actually enjoy the challenge of finding a “good” solution when there was not necessarily a single right answer to a programming task. When establishing the roadmaps for the MONAI and ITK toolkits, both sets of the developers credited the success of their planning and execution to the use of agile software processes . Furthermore, the MONAI platform has established “ working group s” that are composed of users, researchers, and developers who help drive MONAI’s long term plans by gathering feedback from the community.
