Computer Vision News - October 2020

335 Islem Rekik I want to say something especially for the MICCAI community and the international research community. We need to reach out to those talented brains in low R&D countries, minority countries, because I have supervised many talented students who I would say would have been so hard for them to get into MICCAI. Just two years ago, we got the first two papers from the whole continent of Africa. Imagine a whole continent completely discarded from the landscape of MICCAI publications. I think it's very important that we try to reach out and support those brilliant minds, and this will create a nice, beautiful, and powerful geographic diversity. We can join powers, and maybe one day, we could have African datasets that we can use to do inspiring research. African dataset: I’m sure it has its own characteristics, its own challenges, and MICCAI researchers need to tap into that. It's a bigger challenge to solve. Awesome Islem and her fabulous team are presenting 12 papers at MICCAI 2020, starting on October 4. Look out for their presentations! Find out more than 100 interviews of Women in Computer Vision on RSIP Vision's website! be hard on them. One of my students approached me on a Skype call, and he told me, “You know, last time you were a bit hard on me, and it made me feel a bit low because you were criticizing all these things”. It was a Eureka moment because, in the end, I want to get them out of their comfort zones. I know the weaknesses of each one of my students, so I want to help them turn those weaknesses into strengths. Sometimes I might be a bit too tough on them. For this reason, I was very happy when my student approached me to tell me this. I said, “I'm sorry. It was nothing personal. It’s just when I tell you things, you need to think about them” . I encourage them to take the advice and criticism on board but keep this separate from their feelings. This is where I separate passion and rational, I can be very rational, sometimes too rational. I am very glad that you are not being tough on me! [ both laugh ] No, I don’t want to scare you off. Let’s just keep it cool! [ laughs ] Do you have anything else you’d like to share? “It was a Eureka moment because, in the end, I want to get them out of their comfort zones.”
