Tutorial 50 Jordi Pont-Tuset also emphasized the importance of good time management for writing reviews and shared his strategyforcomposinghisaward-winning reviews. One emphasis of his talk was that writing a good review takes a lot of effort, but that this level of effort is what we should contribute, just as we expect the reviewers for our submissions to do a thorough job. Jordi also emphasized a review’s role of providing constructive feedback to the authors. Fatma Güney gave a very detailed talk about her approach to reviewing, starting withher threepillars of reviewing ( critical thinking, constructive input, empathy ). She talked about how to address the different audiences of a review (authors, other reviewers, area chairs) and how to approach the review in an organized manner, and provided a list of good practices . One important point in her talk was clearly weighting concerns raised in reviews and how to communicate these weights. Next, Konrad Schindler talked about “ novelty is in the eye of the beholder ”. He cautioned that truly novel papers are very rare and that most papers that get published describe useful but minor upgrades or apply existing techniques to new tasks. The focus of his talk was to focus more on questions like “Is this paper going to be useful / interesting / stimulating to the community?” and “Is it exciting without obvious flaws?” rather than focusing on novelty. Michael Goesele talked about teaching reviewing to grad students in a seminar he gave at TU Darmstadt in Germany. He detailed how he simulated the review process in the course by picking papers, asking the students to provide reviews, and making accept / reject decisions and the practical problems he faced as part of the course. The focus of his talk was on how to teach reviewing in an organized manner . In the third part of the tutorial, Andrew Fitzgibbon focused on writing rebuttals "… write the type of reviews that we ourselves would like to receive" Andrew Fitzgibbon Best of CVPR 2020
