Computer Vision News - August 2020

During the last few years, we have experienced a tremendous development in video analysis using deep learning technology. This branch of action analysis was starting with video applications and was translated with much success in the medical field. Medical areas like urology, endoscopy and robotic surgery have very widely benefitted from the contribution of this new powerful classification and analysis of videos to better understand the procedure. This technology opened a new horizon to a task that in the past was performed manually, with all the shortcomings of the manual solution. The need to analyze and understand what was seen in the video called for a better and more efficient solution . It is evident now, from many works exploring robotic surgery (including tool detection and workflow analysis ) that artificial intelligence provides us with very useful, precise and precious information that the surgical team needs to know. Another big challenge is in endoscopic surgery , where video is the prominent source of data about the procedure. The surgeon needs solutions to analyze the large amount of information collected by the endoscopy probe during the procedure. Nowadays, deep learning technology enables us to provide the surgeon with rich and fast information as needed. Video Analysis for Endoscopy, Urology and Robotic Surgery RSIP Vision Projects 10
