The Korean computer vision community started out small. I remember my Master’s advisor, Kyoung Mu Lee, was one of the frontiers along with Professor In So Kweon in KAIST, but then the numbers grew. Now, we are a big part of the computer vision community across the world. Do you think there is a cultural difference between Koreans who are in Korea and Koreans who work abroad? In Korea, we collaborate a lot with Korean companies like Samsung and Hyo Jin Kim is a research scientist at Facebook Reality Labs in Redmond, Washington, where she works on a research project called LiveMaps with an amazing team, Surreal. Her current research focuses on learning image embeddings and local image features for image retrieval and image-based localization. I haven’t been home for three years now because of visa issues and I was preparing for graduation, so it’s really nice to spend some time with my family. W hat is your view about the huge Korean presence at ICCV 2019? Out of 7,500 participants, 3,000 are Koreans. Yes, I was very surprised at that. I think many Koreans are now interested in AI in general. There was this big competition thatGoranafewyearsagocalledAlphaGo versus Lee Sedol. Lee Sedol is an idol for Go in Korea. He is huge. The fact that AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol was sensational news in Korea. Even the President said we should focus our strengths on AI,
