6 Computer Vision News Application Application As a part of their collaboration with New Balance, they also offer a slow motion video captured by an iPhone or iPad that displays the dynamic part of the feet while a person is running on a track. This solution, actually developed by New Balance, supplements the Volumental scanner to give a complete image of the foot in order to find the perfect measurement for footwear for optimal support and comfort (see video below). With a complete image of the foot, Volumental is seeing good traction of their product in stores. 80% of the customers getting scanned actually buy the shoe, making it a very good sales process. Their technology is featured in New York’s biggest running hub with customers who frequently run around Central Park and other areas of the city. Customer feedback suggests that, as a result of the scans, people try a different size and shoe type that they never would have otherwise and also experience improved foot support during running. For those who wear insoles for added foot support, Volumental applies a mathematical adjustment to ensure the correct measurement of the foot. Volumental doesn’t just work with athletic footwear for running. They also have customers outside of the sports industry with interest from companies producing custom shoes. Shoes made by hand require a high degree of service and quality. With Volumental, they can measure a foot perfectly in 3D with its full shape. In addition, they are working with a hockey skate producer which will feature the solution in a number of stores. Though their product is not to be found yet in U.S. ski resorts, they already offer it in many ski resorts in Europe, owing to ski boot shops like Intersport and manufacturers like Wintersteiger . Only a few weeks ago, Volumental’s 3D scanner Vandra was awarded the product of the year prize at ISPO , one of the largest retail conferences for ski sports. Looking ahead, Aydemir and his team will work to continuously improve the user experience of the scanner. At the same time, they are connecting a large amount of data from all of their stores. That ends up with tens of thousands of people being scanned in a very short amount of time. In certain instances, they record what the customer has actually purchased; which size, model and so on. They plan to combine these two types of data to build a smarter recommendation, which they call “ the Fifth Engine ”. the Fifth Engine
