The 6th International Workshop on Pulmonary Image Analysis saw the intervention of Selvan Raghavendra, who presented a work on extraction of airway trees in CT examinations. Knowing the airway tree structure has important clinical application in diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While most methods use region growing on intensity levels and thresholding, in this work Selvan explored the possibility of using multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) for segmenting airway trees. MHT can improve segmentation results, as it incorporates additional global information when compared to methods that rely on making instantaneous decisions. The results show improvements in performance when compared to the original method and region growing on intensity images.
