Computer Vision News - June 2016
CVN: Why has RE•WORK chosen to be an all-female events organizing company? What advantages do you find in this particular setup? Sophie Curtis: We are a strong advocate for women in technology and science (and every other industry for that matter) and recognize the importance of diversity in tech - I think well-roundedness makes for the best progress to be made in all fields, and problem solving works best when you have many unique and diverse perspectives and opinions. So at RE•WORK we regularly feature female speakers at our events, in speaker interviews on the RE•WORK blog, and we also host dinners with an all-female lineup. Our next one is the Women in Machine Intelligence & Healthcare Dinner on 11 October, which is sponsored by IBM Watson Health . “ The announcement made by Google at our summit received attention worldwide ” CVN: Can you tell us anything curious that happened at one of your events? Sophie Curtis: You have most likely heard about Google ’s announcement of a new app called Im2Calories , which made worldwide headlines last year. Google have only spoken publicly about it once: when Kevin Murphy (a research scientist at Google) announced the news during his presentation at our Deep Learning Summit in Boston in May 2015. They’ve not released any further news about it, but everybody has heard it one way or another through our summit (it was originally written about on Popular Science by an attending reporter - read it here ) . 24 Computer Vision News Event of the Month
