Computer Vision News - June 2016

CVN: Can you give one example? Sophie Curtis: On our event’s web page it is possible for anyone to use our ‘Suggest a Startup’ and we also invite innovative startups applying cutting-edge science and technology to have a real impact on business and society. We are often delighted to find out through news sites that quite a few of the Deep Learning and Computer Vision startups that have spoken at our events have since been acquired by large companies. For instance, MetaMind Founder and CEO Richard Socher spoke at the first ever Deep Learning Summit in San Francisco , January 2015, and they were recently acquired by Salesforce . At that same Deep Learning Summit, Yi Li gave a presentation as CEO of Orbeus (also a sponsor of the event), who were recently acquired by Amazon . Also Emotient Founder & Lead Scientist Marni Bartlett spoke at the summit and, as you may already know, Emotient was recently acquired by Apple . Computer Vision News Event of the Month 23 CVN: Do you think the success of your formula is also due to the relatively limited size of the attendance? Sophie Curtis: In our experience, and from attendee feedback, sometimes capping our numbers gives for a more intimate experience - for instance the collaboration and knowledge- sharing we want to encourage is easier to achieve in settings about the size of our summits. This will be the first Machine Intelligence Summit we hold in Berlin , so we expect around 200 attendees, whereas some other events such as the Deep Learning Summit in San Francisco (26-27 January 2017) will be held alongside the Virtual Assistant Summit , so this can take the numbers up to around 500. “ The collaboration and knowledge-sharing we want to encourage is easier to achieve in settings about the size of our summits ”
