Computer Vision News - August 2016

All agree that sleep is important: parents on average lose about 44 days of sleep on average in the first year of parenting. Sleep is also a leading factor in the development and health of a child. 3 out of 10 kids suffer from sleep problems. All parents face the challenge of putting their baby to sleep. This is why Nanit decided to help, producing what they believe is the first consumer camera on the market that classifies behaviors and measures child sleep as well as parent interaction using computer vision and machine learning algorithms. We decided to talk to Assaf Glazer , Nanit’s CEO. Glazer spent the last 15 years working on how to make cameras smart. He earned his PhD at Haifa’s Technion in the field of machine learning and computer vision. At Applied Materials , before his postdoc at Cornell University , he built cameras with silicon slices to tell which kind of defects you were looking at. At the beginning there were 2 algorithm guys working on this problem to classify defects with computer vision and machine learning. It turned out to be a highly successful project for Applied Materials. But when Glazer started his PhD, he became a parent (he is now expecting his third child). Wanting to know more about his kid, he found that the many cameras out there on the market offered poor user experience and poor image quality. After looking at millions of cameras, he realized that parents deserve more: “ The idea started - he says - from a curiosity to learn about my kid and make better decisions for my kid as a parent. ” Computer vision has hard problems to solve and Glazer was used to do just that: cameras located in random places, with different objects to identify, along with their orientation, indoor/outdoor, etc. drawing a model on the behavior classification tasks the scientific community has been dealing with for a decade. “ The idea started from a curiosity to learn about my kid and make better decisions for my kid as a parent ” 4 Computer Vision News Application Nanit Application Assaf Glazer, CEO of Nanit
