CVPR Daily - Friday

Sara Atito is a researcher at the Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing (CVSSP) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Surrey. More than 100 inspiring stories of Women in Computer Vision here! Sara, you are not originally from Surrey. Yes, I come from Egypt. I am Egyptian. You are in Surrey now, but you also spent time in another country. Is that right? Yes, I spent some time in Istanbul, Turkey. I will tell you the story of how I ended up here. I did my bachelor's and my master’s in Egypt. Both of them were in computer science. During my master's, I also interned with Sony in Stuttgart, Germany. Then I collaborated with the Technical University of Berlin. After that, I continued my PhD studies in Potsdam, Germany. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I quit and went to Istanbul for my PhD. It was a very nice decision because I enjoyed my PhD. I had an amazing supervisor. Then before finishing my PhD, I started my position here as a research fellow at the University of Surrey. What do you focus on in your research? I work on different things. My main PhD topic was face attributes classification. Along the way, I worked on different projects. For example, I worked in plant identification and then moved to skin lesion classification. That is a workshop and competition in CVPR. We ranked second, which was really nice! Another project was Covid classification. That work is deployed in a hospital in Cerrahpaşa , Istanbul. It is lovely to see your work applied in real life. There were some other projects as well. Then I moved here to 21 DAILY CVPR Friday Sara Atito
