It was not easy! The advantage from my perspective was that I was not really operating under pressure. A lot of it was out of my interest and curiosity. I didn’t know that I was going to do research or that I have to publish a paper so that I can get into grad school. It was more like, “ This is interesting. Let’s try it out in grad school. ” With less pressure, it is certainly much easier. I hope so! How was it for a young lady, about 20 years old, to go to Hong Kong by herself? I had a very good experience in Hong Kong. I had a very good group of friends in undergrad. Most of my friends in undergrad ended up doing a PhD. We were all international students as well. I had a great time. You also had some success in mathematical competitions. I did a fair bit of math competitions, back in high school, in the Philippines. Did you win trophies or prizes? I guess the highlight would be I joined the International Mathematical Olympiad back in my high school days. I got medals from there. Let’s talk about your work. What are you doing for your PhD? I don’t have a very clear research statement in mind in terms of a grand goal. I just started two years ago. I am currently working on analysis of 19 DAILY CVPR Wednesday Mikaela Angelina Uy
