CVPR Daily - Thursday

“ Okay, let me think about it. ” Then I started to think more about machine learning, computer vision, and I was interested a bit in healthcare. I found this really interesting idea while thinking about a PhD: machine learning can be used in human emotion - to simulate, recognize, detect human emotion! I talked to that professor and he turned out to be my supervisor. I told him, “ I’m really interested in doing a PhD in computer vision trying to understand human emotion. ” And he said, “ That’s very cool! Let’s do that! ” I was looking for a problem in healthcare that is really going to make an impact in peoples’ lives. I wanted to do something useful. Who was your supervisor? His name is Rangachar Kasturi. He is in the University of South Florida. He is a very, very well known person and a very, very nice person. You said you didn’t mean to get a PhD, but you knew that you were quite talented in science. Is that right? I always liked statistics. I have the mentality for research. I know how to do research, but the idea wasn’t really in my mind. The main reason was I couldn’t find an area that fascinated me. I couldn’t find my passion. Is it important to be passionate about what you do? To me? Yes! For other people, it might not be the case. Research is a very, very long process. It requires patience. Many times, you need to redo an experiment. If you don’t have the passion, if you don’t really love what you do, it’s going to be really hard to keep going. How does the story continue? We had this focus to do a PhD in machine learning to simulate emotion. 19 DAILY CVPR Thursday Ghada Zamzmi
