CVPR Daily - Thursday

“ I love the field I’m in! ” he grins. “ The subfield that I’m focusing my research on is learning from limited labeled data, including unsupervised learning, few-shot learning, semi- supervisedlearning. That’s basically the whole content of what I’m interested in. That subfield is very exciting and it’s growing very quickly, with huge gains in the research direction in the past couple of years. We are learning so much. It’s growing so rapidly that it’s getting much more attention now, so it’s been a challenge to compete with other researchers to get a coveted spot at CVPR! ” Brian Keller is the Chief Data Scientist at Flyreel. He joined us to share his views on the field. “ When you look at what’s happening in the field, there’s the bigger is better mindset, and that’s bigger datasets, bigger models, and very expensive training times, ” he tells us. “ Then there’s another line of research that’s looking at smarter ways of doing things: Few-shot learning approaches, being more efficient in our training, and making better use of data. This research falls into that category. Vu’s work is highlighting how we can be more efficient with what we have. GPT-3 is a really cool model, for example, but how much energy and electricity did it take to develop and train that? It’s estimated at $4.6 million to train that model. Clearly, not everybody can do that, but collectively as a community we’re getting better at building much more accurate, efficient models . ” Flyreel currently employs around 50 people but has ambitious plans. “ We’re in the process of hiring technical talent, ” Brian reveals. “ We’re looking for lots of engineers and computer vision researchers to help accelerate our product roadmap. We’ve got enormous demand from our current customers who have been growing at a rapid speed and we need to grow our technical headcount to continue to meet current and future needs. ” Before we wrap up, Vu has one final call to action for you all: “ In my presentation you will see that it is possible to reconstruct a room layout very accurately using only 100 labeled examples . If you want to know how, come to my session! ” If that has piqued your interest, Vu invites you to watch his presentation and explore his PDF poster. Take part in his live Q&A during Paper Session Eleven today (Thursday) at 22:00- 00:30 EDT. 12 DAILY CVPR Thursday Presentation
