CVPR Daily - Wednesday
DAILY Wednesday General Co-chair 5 scalable, globally accessible piece of infrastructure software to support this virtual event. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today, which is able to provide a large global conference in the middle of a pandemic! I would particularly like to welcome newcomers to CVPR . If you are new, or someone who has joined us in the past and particularly values the networking elements of our event, I would encourage you to make full use of the opportunities to interact with authors and each othe r. If you are a little shy in the real world but feel more comfortable interacting online, this will be the perfect meeting for you! We have tried to equitably share the burdens between authors and attendees, and do the best we can for everyone. One compromise we have made is around time zones. With a truly global audience , we want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to interact with the sessions they are most interested in. This does mean some late nights and/or early starts for authors, but we hope it will give maximum exposure to their work and guarantee attendees have the same quality experience wherever they are logging in from. One advantage that a virtual conference has over a physical event is that you can view multiple presentations and posters without risking the scheduling clashes or time limitations that you might ordinarily face. Another advantage is that you won’t find crowds of people gathering around the most popular posters that keep you from getting close enough to hear the discussion. Our hope is that this will level the playing field and bring some additional attention to authors who may not normally be so busy. We spoke recently to the organizers of ICLR 2020 , which also went virtual this year, and they told us that attendance at some of their poster sessions was surprisingly small. This is all the more reason to encourage you to visit the Q&A slots for any oral or poster that you are particularly excited by. Take a chance! You might discover that you have a valuable opportunity to speak directly with someone who is a leader in their field, or whose work you have long admired. This is not always easy in a traditional CVPR, so do make the most of this golden opportunity. We hope you continue to enjoy exploring this industry leading conference and this second issue of CVPR Daily . Please keep sharing the magazine!
