CVPR Daily - Tuesday

DAILY T u e s d a y Program Co-chair 5 fellow program chairs, Greg Mori , Kate Saenko and Ce Liu for everything they have done. As program chairs, it’s essential to find the right trade-off between innovation and tradition. Changes are risky, but we always want to do something new as the conference grows each year. One thing we have done differently this year is to change the subject areas to better reflect recent trends in computer vision. Feedback from the meeting was very positive and we were all looking forward to meeting up again in Seattle. However, little did everyone know, our San Diego meeting was the last trip many of us would make before everything changed. Once the pandemic hit, we could see that the physical meeting was in danger and began to think about a Plan B. You can’t underestimate what a daunting task it is to put together the complex infrastructure needed for a virtual conference in the space of a couple of months , but we have risen to the challenge and what an exciting journey it has been! Building the right team was so important. Nicole Finn , our Event Producer, has done a fantastic job. Nicole worked with our general chairs - Terry Boult , Gérard Médioni , and Ramin Zabih - and we thank them all for their hard work and determination. This was uncharted territory for everyone, and we spent a great deal of time discussing how we can guarantee attendees will continue to receive the premier experience they have come to expect from CVPR. We have an online platform that is more than just a video repository. It allows authors to present and interact with those watching to create a fully immersive event. Our Technical Chair, Daniel Vlasic from Google , has been brilliant, and this is a heads-up to future organizers to ensure they have bright technical support on board! I view this virtual conference experience as something akin to reverse teaching. In reverse teaching, students look at your lectures at home and then in class you answer their questions and talk about complementary material. Our presentations will be ready 24 hours before the conference . There are allocated timeslots for each session, but papers will be available in advance. To provide maximum opportunities for our global audience to take part, each oral and poster session will have two 2-hour interactive Q&A periods starting 12 hours apart. If people prepare by watching the videos in advance, then use the sessions as an opportunity to ask questions and engage with the authors, there will be much to learn! We wish you a successful CVPR 2020 and hope you enjoy all the fascinating content in this first issue of CVPR Daily !
