Digital Space Medicine 16 CARS 2018 Preview “ The spirit that we want to bring to this session is to bring worlds closer! ” Cypko wishes to reach highly knowledgeable experts of computer- assisted medicine at CARS . The focus at his CARS session will be to make people aware of the need for medical decision-making support in space, including space related life-science research as well as the development of diagnostic and treatment technologies. The intention is, on the one hand, to present the current status of where this work is at, the difficulties it entails and the possibilities of where the work could go. On the other hand, Cypko wishes to present the research opportunities and space-agency funding for projects of this nature. Cypko states: “ Of course the conference attendees are focused on terrestrial problems, Earth problems, but in the end, if you solve problems for space – which is a very extreme environment, because of the limited space in the space craft, because of the oxygen reduction, and radiation, for instance – if you solve the problem in this extreme environment then you can apply it also on Earth in hospitals, in surgical wards, or catastrophic situations where you don’t have all the experts at the spot, where you don’t have a huge hospital because it has been bombed, for example. ” One of Cypko’s main aims of the space session is that researchers from the CARS community will also apply space relevant articles or adapt their research to space relevance. The initial space session is designed to fill the gap between the agencies which seem to be far away and the researchers who may have never heard of these projects or thought about this topic.
