Recent trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and surgical data science have shown promising technical advancements in imaging, surgical navigation and robotic intervention. We are moving towards a new era of AI-assisted robotic surgery with technologies having the potential of providing more stability, guidance and decision support during surgery, leading towards reducing surgeon’s cognitive load and procedural time. This talk will highlight AI applications in different surgical procedures and where we stand in terms of their clinical translation for moving towards next generation of surgical intervention.
Full bio: Dr Sophia Bano is a Senior Research Fellow at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), University College London (UCL), where she is part of the Surgical Robot Vision group. At UCL, she has contributed to the GIFT-Surg (Wellcome/EPSRC Guided Instrumentation for Fetal Therapy and Surgery) project. Her research focuses on developing computer vision and artificial intelligence techniques for context awareness, machine consciousness and navigation in minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery.
Dr Bano received the BEng in Mechatronics Engineering and MSc in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. In 2009, she was awarded an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for the MSc in Computer Vision and Robotics (VIBOT) programme by Heriot-Watt University (UK), University of Girona (Spain) and University of Burgundy (France). This was followed by an internship at Imperial College London (UK) where she contributed to the STING (ERC Soft Tissue Intervention Neurosurgical Guide) project. In 2016, she received a joint PhD from Queen Mary University of London (UK) and Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), funded by an Erasmus Mundus Fellowship. Before joining UCL-WEISS in 2018, Dr Bano worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Dundee on the ACE-LP (EPSRC Augmenting Communication using Environmental data to drive Language Prediction) project.
